Extra-Tropical Cyclone Nuri Is Hammering Alaskan Islands Now As It Moves Into The Bering Sea

Typhoon Nuri turned into a mid-latitude cyclone after it left Japanese shores and is now battering Alaskan Islands with 150 Kph winds.

At present Nuri is passing through the outer chain of islands near Bering Sea [Includes Russia's Kommandorskie Islands and US Attu, Kiska and Adak Islands].

The storm is intense. Its minimum pressure will reach 930 Mb soon. Luckily it is passing now through very sparsely populated areas now. About 1000 people live in the Kommandorskie Islands and about 100 live in the Adak Islands. Attu and Kiska are uninhabited.

The cyclone will enter the Bering Sea and then subside in the next two days. But it has left the fishing ships in the sea scurrying for cover. No one in their right minds would linger on as such a storm approaches.

In the US the people in Adak islands will be worst affected. In fact 120+ Kph winds are already battering the island. Pribilof island and Unalaska will see strong winds, rough seas and precipitation in the next 2 days.

Nuri is going to affect the weather of the US. A cold front will move down over parts of northern US Monday as Nuri will push down cold winds from the north. [SEE MAP BELOW]

Nuri Will Turn Into A Strong Extra Tropical Storm And Affect Aleutian Islands. Eastern US Will Feel "Nuri" Effect

Presently  a weakened Typhoon Nuri is barreling along the waters off Japan's coast. On Friday it will strengthen again in the Bering Sea and pass the waters off the US Aleutian Islands. A direct hit is not expected but western islands will be severely affected.

Post-Nuri will pass between Komandorskie Islands [Russia] and Attu Islands [US] on Friday, November 7, 2014,  as a powerful storm. The Komandorskie [Commander islands] are inhabited by only 600 people. The Attu-Kiska Islands are uninhabited.

The worry is that Nuri will approach the populated Pribilof Island on Sunday and start disintegrating there. This island will see very high waves and hurricane winds. Bristol Bay will see very rough weather.

Alaskan shores will witness a storm not seen in decades.

A weakened Nuri will gain energy from the Pacific drift and turn into a powerful storm again. The affects of these storm will be felt in eastern US. A cold wave with December-like temperatures is expected in New York in a few days.

Super Typhoon Nuri Will Batter Japanese islands Of Daito and Chichi-Jima Tonight Head-on

When we had said earlier that the super typhoon in NW Pacific would not affect any inhabited areas, we were wrong. [Our weak Geography, perhaps?]. Nuri may bypass the man Japanese Islands but it is going to give a nasty thrashing to  the little Bonin [Ogasawara Islands] Islands which are about 1000 Kph south of Tokyo. Of these islands only Chichi-Jima and Haha-Jima are inhabited. About 2500 people live on these islands.

But these islands are luckier. Only the fringe [Which is considerable].  of the Typhoon will affect them . Also Iwo-Jima.

The Japanese islands of Daito will have the storm passing right through them. Now these Daito Islands are not some tiny volcanic eruption. It has an area of 44 square kilomaters and has a population of about 2000. Nuri is going to hit them head-on today late night [local time] with 185-245 Kph winds. God bless them.

If these islands are lucky, Nuri could move between Daito and Iwo-Jima, but even then the affects will be substantial.

We do not hear about the impending catastrophe that the Daito Islands face is because they are too small. And because they are in Japan. Imagine the media coverage if it had been an island off say the American or British coast. Anyway.

The forecast track of Typhoon Nuri says it will hit the Daito Islands head-on tomorrow early morning [Local time]

Typhoon Nuri Will Turn Into A 340-380 Kph Monster Typhoon Today

What does one call it? The word "Super Typhoon" does not suffice. Today night the monster in the North-West Pacific called Nuri will reach a frightening strength. Normal winds of 340 Kph gusting up to a horrendous 380 Kph.

What power of nature. Mother Earth is merciful that this storm will reach its peak when no land mass is nearby. Imagine what winds of 380 Kph would do on a populated area! One shudders to even think about it.

Nuri is not going to hit Japan directly. It is going cruise along its shores, coming closest on November 6, 2014 near Tokyo. The wind speed then will be 185 Kph gusting to 230 Kph. Tokyo is in for a windy Thursday.

This is the winds Nuri is going to throw according to JTWC forecasts. Note that the "KTS" in the graph is knots, not Kph. 1 knot = 1.85 Kph

Typhoon Nuri Will Turn Into A Monster Super Typhoon Tomorrow

The Pacific ocean is known to churn out monster storms. It will prove that once again. Typhoon Nuri which lies 2220 Kms SSW of Yokosuka, Japan will turn into a super typhoon with winds of 250 Kph gusting up to a whopping 310 Kph. Phew!

It is curving towards Japan but it it will not strike the islands, but pass it by on November 6-7, 2014. But the country will feel its effects. The eastern coast will see strong winds and rains on those days.

Japan is lucky that Nuri has decided to give it a skip.

Typhoon NURI To Form Today: A Category 3 Hurricane

The birth of Typhoon Nuri took place just west of Guam. By today evening (UTC} it will be a typhoon.

The word "Nuri" in Malaysian means a type of parrot. Well this bird is going to chirp very loudly. The JTWC predicts Typhoon Nuri will be a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 200 Kph on November 3, 2014.

And Nuri is going to fly to Japan. It will kiss Japanese shores on November 7 and move along the east coast with strong gale and a deluge. Tokyo too will feel its effect.

The Philippines will remain untouched by the storm. In a day or two it will curve northwards towards Japan.
