DEEP DEPRESSION: HEAVY RAINS LIKELY IN SRI LANKA, SOUTH INDIA MAY 15 ONWARDS

MAY 11, 2016

EXTREME WEATHER WARNING

Very heavy rains along with strong winds are possible in Sri Lanka and the southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala from May 15, 2016 as a result of a Bay of Bengal deep depression that will form near the coast of Sri Lanka in the next 3 days.

Large scale flooding may occur owing to the torrential precipitation that will accompany the passage of the storm over these areas.

The deep depression/tropical storm may form on May 14, that is this Saturday just south of Sri Lanka. Over the next 4-5 days it will cross over into India and move through, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Forecast models also hint of the possibility of the system emerging into the Arabian Sea on May 19, 2016 off the Karnataka coast and intensifying into a tropical cyclone (ROANU). This will bring very strong winds and torrential rainfall to coastal Karnataka around May 20.

The tropical cyclone will move north along the Indian coast. It may rapidly intensify into a category 4 storm by May 21 with winds well in excess of 200 km/h.

Northern Karnataka and Goa will be badly affected.
