Good Rainfall In Vidarbha, Telangana, Andhra In Coming Days

JUNE 1, 2017, THURSDAY

Despite the fact that the progress of monsoon will come to a near halt by June 4, 2017, along the Indian west coast, good rains are expected almost daily in parts of Maharashtra (Vidarbha), Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

This will happen because the moist winds from the Arabian Sea will meet with the moisture thrown into India by the Bay of Bengal. So while Mumbai, Gujarat wait patiently for the monsoon to start moving again, this belt in the heart of India will receive good precipitation in the coming days.

As we have said earlier the momentum upwards of the Arabian Sea branch of monsoon will be deflated by a low pressure area in the Arabian Sea that is expected around June 4-5. Now this system will meander around in the sea reaching the area off the central Oman coast by June 9.

Meanwhile the monsoon will awaken from it's slumber on June 8-9 with a fresh rain system gathering off the Konkan coast. Mumbai will receive its first monsoon rains on June 9.

Meanwhile western Madhya Pradesh and southeast Rajasthan will receive good rains on June 8-9. Gujarat will see substantial showers by June 10.

The feverish activity off the Konkan coast by June 10 may throw up a low pressure system. That is what the American GFS model believes.

Even on June 10 the Bay of Bengal low pressure system will be at sea with little inclination to move into India.

Monsoon will lose steam soon as the LPA (Low Pressure Area) will take away the rain clouds back into sea.

Monsoon To Enter Kerala By May 30, Mumbai By June 8

MAY 23, 2017, TUESDAY

Looking at forecast charts by global Numerical Weather Prediction models one can safely say that the southwest monsoon is set to arrive in Kerala by May 30, 2017. Our estimate is it will hit Goa by June 4 and Mumbai by June 7-8.

The monsoon onset we are talking about as decided by parameters set by the indian Meteorological Department. If we were to go by amount of rainfall alone, heavy thunderstorms will start lashing Kerala in the next 3-4 days.

According to accumulated rainfall forecast charts by the European agency, ECMWF, by June 1, parts of Kerala will have received a whopping 334 millimetres of rain. Monsoon is expected to cover coastal Karnataka by June 1 itself.

After the Kerala onset, the rains will clamber up the latitudes quickly and reach Mumbai by June 8. Fortunately for Indian monsoon this year there have been no depressions/tropical cyclones in either the Arabian Sea or Bay of Bengal which suck away its energy and throw it in another direction, thus slowing down its progress.

There is little possibility of a storm in the seas except for a Bay of Bengal upper air cyclonic circulation which may intensify to a low pressure area/tropical storm by month end. But even that is expected to move into Bangladesh/Indian northeast, thus it will actually hasten monsoon's entry into eastern India.

According to the ECMWF forecast rains will be knocking on Goa's doorsteps by June 2.

Monsoon arrival means massive changes in upper atmosphere winds, some 12-13 kilometres high in the air. This June 1 forecast map shows the monsoon winds are already blowing over peninsular India. The perennial easterly jet stream has been pushed northwards into Tibet. This occurs every year during monsoon time.

There is sobering news for those expecting a bumper harvest this year. In it's latest forecast the Bureau of Meteorology says the Indian Ocean Dipole may not be so positive in August. In fact the European model predicts a weak IOD this year.

Similarly NASA and the ECMWF says El Niño may rear it's ugly head by August. Only NOAA paints a rosier picture. Be prepared for poor rains in August-September unless of course the picture changes by then.

Arabian Sea Depression: Heavy Rains In Mumbai, Gujarat On June 10, 2016

JUNE 1, 2016

A deep depression is likely to form in the Arabian Sea around June 9, 2016, which will bring a deluge to coastal Maharashtra (including Mumbai) and Gujarat.

Monsoon will become very active on the Arabian Sea coast of India from June 6. Increased rainfall will be seen in Karnataka and southern Maharashtra from June 6.

Mumbai will receive very heavy rains on June 8-9.

This will culminate in the formation of a tropical depression on June 9 off the Mumbai coast south of Saurashtra.

This system is expected to move into Saurashtra and Kutch regions bringing flooding rains till June 12-13. Coastal Sindh too might receive considerable precipitation.

The system may then swing back into the Arabian Sea, weaken and drift towards Oman. Oman may receive isolated showers by June 16.

The vigorous monsoon activity in the coming fortnight may bring phenomenal amounts of rain on India 's west coast. The forecast map indicates these areas will get accumulated rains of 25 inches in the coming 15 days.

Weather Outlook For India, South Asia, Middle East In Early June 2016

I

MAY 31, 2016

The picture remains hazy with little agreement amongst major NWP models. But from what we gathered, two areas will be of interest in India, concerning monsoons. One is western India, Mumbai, Arabian Sea coastal areas and Gujarat. The second is Andhra Pradesh.

In both these regions there is a possibility of vigorous monsoon activity in early June.

WESTERN INDIA

The GFS still persists with an Arabian Sea trough bringing heavy precipitation to western India around June 10-13, 2016. Heavy pre-monsoon showers may occur in Mumbai on June 5-6. Drought hit Vidarbha will receive heavy rains on June 8-9.

Coastal Karnataka will get drenched on June 4 because of a rain-bearing trough in the Arabian Sea.

The monsoon onset in Mumbai will occur on June 12, 2016 with flooding rains. All because of the Arabian Sea trough which will form in a few days.

After Mumbai, the monsoons will hit Gujarat on June 14.

ANDHRA PRADESH

The European model foresees an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Andhra coast near Visakhapatnam on June 6-7. It will bring good rains to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from June 7 onwards.

It might so happen that we might be staring at a depression on the Andhra Pradesh coast on June 7. Not a mere cyclonic circulation, but even may be tropical cyclone KYANT. Too early to say now.

We continuously analyse weather charts and will keep you informed of developments.

SOUTH CHINA SEA

Another interesting possible development could be the first typhoon in the Western Pacific Ocean in 2016. There is a strong likelihood of typhoon NEPARTAK forming in the South China Sea around June 10. It could strongly affect Taiwan and eastern coast of Japan.

Heavy Rains Possible In Mumbai, Gujarat On June 10, 2016

MAY 29, 2016
XTREME WEATHER POSSIBILITY

It is quite possible that heavy to very heavy rains may lash Mumbai and parts of Gujarat around June 10-12, 2016. Forecast models hint at flooding rains something in the range of 5-6 inches.

This will be possible because of increasing stormy monsoon activity in the West Indian Ocean near the Somalia coast which all numerical weather prediction models say will happen in early June.

This stormy system will throw out  a trough that will gradually migrate to the Indian west coast by June 10.

It is possible the circulation may linger over the Mumbai-Gujarat area for 4-5 days hence flooding could occur in many places.

There are still more than 10 days to go, but it is a real possibility. We shall track the forecasts and keep you updated. At the earliest.

Indian Monsoon 2016 To Rev Up In Early June

MAY 28, 2016

Mumbai will receive upto 4-5 inches of rain by June 12, 2016. Hardly a sign of a delayed weak monsoon. Though the Indian Meteorological Department has warned that the onset over Kerala might be delayed, global forecast models say though monsoon activity may be subdued in the last days of May, things will begin to change by June 5.

Monsoon will gather momentum as it will clamber up the Indian west coast. Mumbai will receive its first heavy showers around June 10, 2016.

By that time rainfall will intensify over the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, southern Maharashtra and Telangana.

Gujarat will start receiving increased pre-monsoon showers. As will Madhya Pradesh. In fact looking at the rain forecast map below only Rajasthan will remain dry by June 13, 2016.

One can say that rainfall activity is going to accelerate in the second week of June.
